Rescue dogs can do anything! Today former MARS orphan Retief became a UKC agility champion! He is now formally UACH Retief of the CDT, CGC, TDInc.I'm so proud of him. I have to thank Deanna & Lisa who gave me great tips when I first adopted him & had some problems integrating him into the pack. I've attached a picture of us with judge Neil Winters.
Klaatu who was 10 in July got a perfect 200 score in agility I & I'm equally proud of my old girl.

Lori (forever home for Sunni, 2003 adoptee)

Lucy came all the way from Minnesota to meet up with her Guiness and here are some pictures of our former "Lady from Minnesota" orphan  now residing and very happy in Chi Town.

Back in June, my husband and I bought a house. We both are experienced dog owners and we both wanted two dogs. We had started searching shelter web sites but became confused as we didn’t know if we should get one dog, then get the other, or to try to get both together. As I searched the shelter pages, I came across a picture of two dogs that just melted my heart. However, it said to contact MARS for more information. MARS? We had no idea what MARS was. We sent the email to MARS and from the point on, have been blessed. My husband and I traveled from Chicago to South Bend where they were being fostered to meet these dogs and fell in love immediately with them. These two Akitas were abandoned in the woods together, found together, fostered together, and eventually we adopted them together (we actually picked them up in South Bend the day we moved and brought them home; talk about hectic!). The odds were against them from the start. After all, it’s probably pretty difficult to find people to adopt not one, but two, 110 lbs Akitas. We wouldn’t trade them for the world. I hope we’ve been as much a blessing to them, as they have to us. They are extremely bonded and it would have been detrimental to separate them. Thanks to all the caring, hard working, supportive and friendly people at MARS, Taylor and Burton were able to remain together. I’ve learned it takes commitment, dedication, compassion and teamwork to rescue these dogs. And just as important, MARS has provided support to us with all our questions being that we were not experienced AKITA owners. Akitas are such a unique breed from all the rest, it’s really important to have a support group/organization that will help you through your issues and questions. MARS is just that and much more. I admire and commend everyone at MARS for all their hard work and important mission. Help spread the word about MARS so that all of these orphan dogs find a caring and loving home. Thank you again MARS.

Becky, John, Burton & Taylor

Chad and Erica adopted Keeta and he has now
grown into one of the most handsome Akitas and goes by the name of Titus.

Hiro, a most happy boy in his new Connecticut home
with Winnie and Phil.

Nicky is a happy boy now!

Mickey has turned out to be quite the little man. Even though he'd like
to have his own way at times, he shows his loving, tender side as well. I
thank God with the help of Jan ( Mickey's foster mom), Patricia Rattray
with Paws for Success, and my husband, willing to work through all the
adjustment including Mickey just being a huge baby boy looking for
security and stability. He is our new little man and the love and joy and
growth we have gained is well worth it all. I believe he knows he is
finally home for good. Rescue is the only way to go, its a great thing to
be able to help the ones we can. Bless you all. --Jeanne & Jay Jacobs

"Nikko" the All-American Akita from MARS

"Nikko" was an Akita that lost her Florida home due to her owner being shipped overseas in the military. She was driven to Joliet, Illinois and taken in by MARS. She was then fostered and placed by Linda McCluskey (Lisa's mom) who lives and resides in northern Wisconsin. "Nikko" has been living happily ever after with her dad, Michael, (pictured) since April 2000 in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin. She regularly visits patients in a local hospital ventilator unit and continues to be the light of her dad's life.

Apollo, formerly Buddy, is now owned by Heather and Terry Bemis our
volunteers and foster family. He is pictured here with Kallie, formerly
Angel, as a pup.

Apollo earned his CGC on 4/28/02 at the MARS Spring Dog Day

Diamond currently lives with Clyde the cat here in Illinois.

Keizo, formerly Palos, lives in Tennessee. He was found frozen to
the ground Christmas of 1999 here in Chicago.

Kallie, formerly Angel, is our Parvo puppy survivor.

May-Lee lives with
her friend Hanna in Indiana. She was a neglect case.

Sheba and China are very happy and Sassy here in Illinois. These two girls were both under 50 lbs. when they arrived at MARS. They are mother and daughter. One can't even tell that Sheba and China were one of the worst starvation/neglect cases we had seen to date when MARS took them in.

Kuma, now Akuma,
lives in Minnesota with MARS pal, Mika, now Miko.

Tapacka and friend Tomo enjoying a beautiful Chicago summer.

4/01 - Tapacka recently was awarded his CGC - AKC Canine
Good Citizen Medal and passed the Therapy Dog International
(TDI) Certification Test

Buck, now Biku, lives in downtown Chicago with his new family
and never misses a trip to Oak Street Beach.

Merlin, formerly Misha, now shares his home with another orphan from
MARS, Aurora, now named Sable, here in the Chicago area.

Bear, formerly known as not only Bert, but Samson, shows us what
escaping into the beauty of Wisconsin's interior is all about.

Polar Bear was adopted February 26, 2000 by the Morris family in Missouri. He is pictured here, from top left, with his friend, a 3 month old foal who lost his mother at birth; touring the grounds of his farm; hanging out with his best sweetie, Kiera; and winding up a long day with a snooze on the couch.

Norman, one of MARS' first orphans, enjoying the good life.
